RE: Winter RV'ing in class C

I would go with the enclosed tanks for sure. We use our MH 12 months out of the year. Our first MH had exposed tanks with heat pads. The tanks would not freeze but the water lines and valves would. Had a heck of a time with a blow dryer at the dump station one time. Antifreeze of course will make sure that your tanks do not freeze but the rest of the plumbing is at risk. Our 2nd MH an Aspect has all plumbing enclosed and is good to 15 degrees. I have tested it out during a stay at Penn State in February for a track meet. It was 14 degrees out side and I was worried but no problems. I just was told by Winnebago to keep the furnace on and you are good to 15 degrees. I also have a garage light with a 75 watts bulb for next year. I will just put that in the enclosed area and then I will feel safe from an expensive freeze up.

RE: Sun or Shade??

Store our MH in our yard partially under a huge Norway Maple. I wax it 4 times a year and clean off often. The MH gets sun in the morning for a couple of hours and shade most of the day in the Summer time. In the Winter it is pretty much the same since the sun is lower in the sky and my neighbor's house and large evergreen trees block the sun during most of the day. It works out pretty well except in the spring and fall when the tree is shedding something. My exterior finish is staying nice because it is not baking in the sun but the unit stays dry because it gets just enough sun so mildew is not a problem.

RE: Itasca Impulse vs Cambria

We have a 2006 Winnebago Aspect 26A. It is awesome. The 09 Cambria/Aspect versions are a different floorplan but I am sure the same quality. The questions have been answered. If it is just the two of you most of the time and maybe four once in a while get the Cambria/Aspect. We use the Aspect for business, track meets, vacation and now we will be looking at college campuses for our daughter.

RE: Why should I buy a class C?

The class c will allow you to drive with facilities at hand and you will also have a quick set up. I would consider the class c.

RE: what would you do....for a boat?

Wow I love boating too! Just to kick off the dock at sunrise and bass fish for 3 hours in the morning and at dusk is great. We have a 26 ft Winnebago Aspect and a 17ft bass boat - Nitro. This is a great combo. 50 HP very good on fuel and can pull a tuber and you can ski off of it. It cost me under 10K in 99. The boat will see its 9 year on the water and boy am I glad we did not wait to get one. It is a perfect lake boat for us. We have a property on a small lake and use the boat whenever we go. My children are late teens and early twenties so no grand kids yet but when they arrive I am sure we will have fun pulling them around. We also were thinking the Porta Boat since we have a 5 hp motor and would like to tow our car on longer trips instead of the boat. That is in the future but we are enjoying the present now! Good Luck and remember life s short so get what you can afford and have fun while you can.

RE: Planning Trip to Erie, PA...any suggestions

Yes I second Preque Island. It is awesome to swin in a body of water that big and it not be the ocean. My daughter went to Merceyhurst College for summer fine arts classes and we went to Presque Island on 3 occasions and also visited the Niagra and had lunch and dinner on the lake front that Summer. Nice town.

RE: so disappointed in jayco and rv direct

I believe that finding a good dealer is hit or miss. I have a great dealer her in PA. Media Camping Center in Fairless Hills. If you are in the market for an RV and you are close they are the best. They stand by their products, are very nice people and are very competitive in price. What more could you ask for. The manager is a normal guy that is as nice as the rest of his staff. What a pleasure. They are like family.

RE: Maryland to Florida and $800 in gas

Philly to the Keys for four to out timeshare for two weeks. Priced out flying into FT Lauderdale and renting a car for two weeks, buying food and boading the dog. Wow! Tried flying directly into Key West no car, food and boading the dog. WOW! Tried driving the RV 3000 mile round trip about $1,500. at $4.00 per gal at 8 mpg. I always estimate high so I feel good when I get home. We get about 10 mpg on the trip down there. Add $ for mis expenses. Take the bikes, fishing rods, snokling equipment, loungers, storage for rv. We will save about $800.00 if we drive the rv. I kept going over the numbers. The realistic numbers on what we would actually do and lets face it the food and the rental car are the most expensive items in the trip, especially when you have to empty the fridge at home only to buy all of the food at the resort for two weeks if you fly. I mean all of the staple kill you. Can I scale it back a cut corners. Yes and No because my wife loves the trip down. We visit out family in FL. Sleep in our own bed and see sights that we would never see if we were to fly down. The bottom line is, as others have said, vacations are expensive. When we take the RV we can get the extras that make the vacation special because we can go at our own pace and enjoy each other. When the price gap is close we take the RV. When the cost is lower that is a no-brainer.

RE: Cost of gas last trip

We are planning our trip to FL where we have a time share in the keys for two weeks. Driving is still cheaper and more relaxing. To fly 3 of us to Ft. Lauderdale (southwest) with a rental car (2 weeks) food and beverage would cost about $2,500.00. Not to mention that my daughter friend would have to buy there own ticket - or we would have to buy it. To drive the RV 3000 mile round trip at 3.75 per gallon at approx 9 mles per gal. (that is what we averaged xmas week) would be $1,200.00 plus we will add $500.00 is mis. costs just to be fair. that is $1,700.00. We bring enough food to last us most of the two week period and we a lot of our friends leave the resort after the week we usually would up taking more food home than we bring. We found a place to store the RV for $75.00 and are thinking about using the savings to purchase a tow bar for our HHR. The food and rental car are the items that kill us. Last year we got a compact car for $223. for the week and would up paying with all the additional costs close to $350. We love the relaxation of traveling in the RV and the it does save us money. The most important thing is that we make memories that are unsurpassed.

Tow Bar Advice

We have an Winnebago Aspect 26A and are thinking about purchasing a tow bar for our Chevy HHR. I was looking on line and seen a Falcon 2 roadmaster hookup. Is this a good setup for the HHR? What type of brake controller should I consider. Would the Prodigy brake controller work well enough. Thank you in advance for any information and insight you have.

RE: Full timing and cutting the costs of leaving a house empty

Armingo, Check out retirement taxes. I think that PA, NC and FL are the only states that will not tax your retirement.

RE: Camping close to home from now on

This fuel upward trend has been moving this way for quite some time. Now it really is hurting everyone. We have a rental property and use the MH as a work vehicle. When I look at the numbers at the end of each year the fuel numbers are always increasing but have been offset by the savings of food, beverage and sometimes lodging while in offseason. When we just used a full sized van the numbers were actually quite a bit larger because of food and lodging expenses but mainly food and entertainment costs. We have actually saved money by using the MH for these long weekend trips to run the business but I have to say that I will now be staying on these trips for 4 or 5 days to get more bang for the buck. Not to many quick weekend trips that are about 600 miles.

Alternator not Charging Coach Batteries

I have a Winnebago Aspect 26A and have noticed that the coach batteries are not charging when the engine is running. Everything else is working properly. I spoke to the dealer the other day about a couple of issues and he said that it is a bad solenoid that controls the flow of charge. Does anyone know if this is a quick fix that I can handle. Where is the solenoid located? Sometimes I just don't want to leave the MH for a week for a quick job.

RE: Anyone like to fish??

I love to fish. I purchased a bass boat 9 years ago and now we hook it up to the MH and get the best of both worlds. Life is to short not to do the things you love when you can. I live in PA also and just wonder why there are so many lakes that will not let you use a motor over 9 or 20 HP. Other states like CT have many more lakes that you can use unlimited horsepower motors. They may resrict your speed but a least you can use your boat motor to fish the lake. They really need to open up some of the water ways for the outdoorsman. I travel to CT and fish there. I can go to 10 lakes in a 40 mile area and use my boat. In PA many of the lakes are electric only and they are 2 times the size of the lakes I go to in CT. I have even talked to the fish and game rangers at some of the RV shows and they really understand and see the difference PA restrictions over other states.
